Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a national movement seeking to make safer and easier walking and bicycling routes for children to school through fun, educational, and encouragement programs.

The City of Stockton developed its first SRTS Plan in December 2017.
Safe Routes to School Plan

The Stockton SRTS Plan documents existing walking and cycling near our schools and recommends projects and programs to help reduce the number of school-related vehicle trips – creating a healthier, safer, more sustainable and environmentally sound community with better air quality and less traffic congestion.

The City’s vision for a comprehensive umbrella plan moving forward is guided by the 5 E’s of SRTS:

  • Education
  • Encouragement
  • Enforcement
  • Engineering
  • Evaluation

The City’s SRTS Plan includes 64 schools in four school districts: Stockton Unified School District, Lodi Unified School District, Lincoln Unified School District, and Manteca Unified School District.

Stockton Unified School District Safety Projects

The City of Stockton is planning improvements near the following schools: John Marshall Elementary, Taylor Elementary, Pittman Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary, McKinley Elementary, and George W. Bush Elementary.

Ways to get involved now!

  1. Respect the School Zone. When driving to or around schools, go no faster than the speed limit and look for children crossing the street or on their bikes. Support efforts to reduce speed limits on key routes to school.
  2. Walk, Bike, or Carpool to School More Often. Do your part to reduce congestion and air pollution, increase safety, and encourage healthy travel with your family.
  3. Spread the Word! Tell your school administrators, PTA chairpersons, City staff, and neighbors/friends you support Safe Routes to School, including specific recommendations in this plan. Share the materials and the website link with others.
  4. Be a Safe Routes “Champion.” Volunteer for special events like International Walk to School Day in October and Bike to School Day in May. Use these resource links to help establish ongoing programs, such as a walking school bus or a carpool sign-up in your neighborhood.

Community Outreach

The SRTS Plan project team conducted infrastructure field reviews around the 64 participating Stockton-area schools to develop a list of project recommendations for students and families to feel safer walking or riding a bicycle to school.

The project lists included in the plan include:

  • Priority Safety Projects
  • Sidewalk Network Completion
  • New Signs and Striping
  • Maintenance Projects
  • ADA Projects

Program Information & Projects
What is the purpose of the Plan?
The SRTS Plan outlines existing Safe Routes to School efforts for Stockton-area schools and provides engineering and program recommendations for each school to help walking or riding a bicycle to school feel safer and more enjoyable for students and their families.
What are complete streets?

A complete street is planned, designed, operated, and maintained to provide safe mobility for all users, including bicyclists, pedestrians, transit vehicles, truckers, and motorists, appropriate to the street’s function. For more information, see the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) website.
