Disabilities Task Force

The Mayor's Task Force for Persons with Disabilities (Disabilities Task Force) is committed to enriching the lives of disabled persons within the community through education, action and outreach.  A person with a disability is one who has a cognitive, psychological or physical impairment that substantially limits one or more major life functions such as seeing, hearing, walking, learning, or caring for one's self.

 

Purpose

The purpose of the Disabilities Task Force is to promote community participation and awareness of persons with disabilities by focusing on disability issues and building community development strategies that relate specifically to persons with disabilities.

 

Goals and Commitments

  • Advise the Mayor and City Council on matters affecting the disabled community and act as the City's official advisory body for implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

  • Review and comment on City policies, programs and actions that affect persons with disabilities, including the City's ADA Transition Plan.

  • Render advice and assistance to other City boards and commissions, to City staff and to private agencies on matters affecting persons with disabilities.

  • Participate at the local, state and national levels in the advancement of disability rights.

  • Actively seek State and Federal funding to assist in implementation and maintenance of City's ADA Transition Plan.

  • Further educate City and County employees, as well as citizens and local businesses on issues affecting persons with disabilities.

Sub Committees

  1. Education and Employment Committee - Informs and educates employers and employees regarding benefits of employing persons with disabilities,  provides resources available to enhance and support proactive employment, promotes recognition of those employees in the community and creates public awareness.
  2. Housing Committee - Assists the City in achieving the goal of providing adequate and appropriate housing for persons with disabilities, including, but not limited to homeless shelters, infrastructure improvements, and economic development activities.
  3. Mobility and Accessibility Committee - Provides direction on accessibility issues regarding transportation and ensures that various transportation needs are being addressed concerning the Para-Transit system.
  4. Community Development and Outreach Committee - Provides information about resources for people with disabilities, and advises and makes recommendations to the Mayor and City Council.
