Missing Persons

Thousands of Americans are reported missing each year in the United States. The Family Crimes Unit of the Stockton Police Department Investigations Division handles missing person reports. A Missing Person Report should be filed as soon as you are concerned about a person's absence. There is no waiting period to report a missing person to the police.  The Stockton Police Department considers missing person cases as open and active investigations until the missing person is located.

Reporting A Missing Person

Once a report has been completed, missing persons are reported through the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS) by the Stockton Police Department. CLETS will enter the case into the U.S. Nationwide Missing Person System.

Missing Children
Missing children or juveniles are classified as:

  • Voluntary
  • Runaway
  • Abducted by a stranger
  • Unknown
  • Suspicious circumstances

Missing Adults

Adults are classified as voluntary and/or disabled dependent adults or suspicious circumstances.

Parent Abduction and Child Custody Cases
These cases are dual investigations by the Stockton Police Department and the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office, Child Abduction Unit.
